Timor Leste begins practical peace education with HWPL

Signing an MOA with the Ministry of Higher Education and MOU with higher education institutions

G-NEWS (DILI) — On July 16, 2024, the international peace organization HWPL signed an MOA with the Ministry of Higher Education of Timor-Leste and an MOU with six higher education institutions in the conference room of the Ministry of Higher Education through a “MOA Signing Ceremony with the Ministry of Higher Education and MOU Signing Ceremony with higher education institutions”.

The event took place from 10 AM to 12 PM and was attended by approximately 50 people, including the Minister of Higher Education, Director General of Ministry of Higher Education and Rectors from higher education institutions Through this MOA and MOUs, HWPL aims to implement practical peace education in Timor-Leste, cultivate peace-minded citizens, and enhance the quality of education to achieve sustainable peace in Timor-Leste.

In early June, an HWPL peace education seminar was held in the same venue with the cooperation of the Ministry of Higher Education of Timor-Leste, recognizing the importance of peace education. During the seminar, The organizations under the Ministry of Higher Education were introduced to HWPL and its peace education, and a briefing session for signing MOUs was conducted. This seminar was held in cooperation with the Ministry of Higher Education of Timor-Leste, which recognizes the importance of peace education.

João António Soares, a lecturer at the Universidade da Paz (UNPAZ), introduced the peace education curriculum based on a 12-lesson textbook and provided detailed explanations on how the peace education would be implemented. The peace education promoted by HWPL is one of the three projects aimed at submitting Article 10, Clause 38 of the DPCW to international law at the United Nations. It aims to awaken the spirit of peace among citizens and encourage them to fulfill their duties as messengers of peace.

The event began with introductions of the Ministry of Higher Education and HWPL, followed by the MOA signing ceremony with the Ministry and the MOU signing ceremony with the organizations. Between the signing ceremonies, Lighthouse International School performance team performed, adding to the atmosphere of peace.

The signing of this MOA and the organizational MOUs laid the groundwork for implementing practical peace education in Timor-Leste. Additionally, the HWPL Peace Education Department plans to develop and implement customized peace education programs tailored to each educational institution in Timor-Leste, which is expected to gradually improve the quality of education in the country.

HWPL plans to closely collaborate with the Ministry of Higher Education and its affiliated institutions to promote the introduction of sustainable peace education throughout Timor-Leste. Through this initiative, they aim to spread a culture of peace across Timor-Leste society and take a step further toward achieving sustainable peace.
